Week in Savings

Week in Savings: 12/8 – 12/14

by Gina on December 14, 2010

Another week down! I can’t believe it is almost the end of another year. I suppose this would be a good time to get my 2011 goals in order. As for this past week, here are some of the things I did to save/make some green:

  • Used Amazon Gift Card balance, earned from Swagbucks and other contests, to purchase a laminator for $16.99 (something I have been wanting for a while) and I also picked up 2 bags of Starbucks Natural Infusions Vanilla Coffee for $4 each. You can use code FUSIONC5 right now to score $5 off this product!
  • Won $250 in gift cards, gift codes, and various products from blog contests
  • Used a Groupon I purchased last week for Dormzy (posted HERE) and stocked up on canned Tuna and Chicken. I was able to get 28 cans of Tuna and 12 cans of chicken for about $20 – the amount I spent to purchase the Groupon after my Discover Card cash back incentive.
  • Had a batch cooking day on Sunday and made meatloaf, baked ziti, cheeseburger casserole, and cheeseburgers (all WW recipes) from ground beef and turkey we had stocked in the freezer. This means we are all set for this week’s dinners since we also have homemade pizza dough and breaded tilapia ready to go as well!
  • Started exercising again! Made use of my elliptical machine 4 times this week – improves my health and well-being, which is always a money-saver!
  • Finished reading two great frugally inspirational books this week: (1) The Complete Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn (a wealth of knowledge!) and (2) The Ultimate Cheapskate’s Roadmap to True Riches by Jeff Yeager (a light, but good read).

Did you do anything special this past week to save or earn some $$? If so, I would love to hear about it!

Week in Savings: 12/1 – 12/7

by Gina on December 7, 2010

These are some of the money saving/earning activities that we have taken part in this week:

  • Used Amazon Gift Card balance, earned from Swagbucks and other contests, to purchase bulk quantites of Snyders Pretzels, Sucanat (organic brown sugar), and packets of Truvia. I am working very hard on stockpiling at rock bottom prices to lower our grocery bill. I think we’ll see much improvement next year.
  • Won $315 in gift cards, gift codes, and various products from blog contests
  • Learned to make my own Whole Wheat Flour Tortillas
  • Made 3 batches of homemade pizza dough for the freezer… saves time on busy nights!
  • Made protein bars from scratch (store bought ones are expensive!!)
  • Keeping the temperature in the house low and using more blankets and adding layers of clothing in order to save on heating.
  • Purchased 18 glass containers (FREE with gift codes), to use instead of plastic, for food storage. These will last longer and are healthier because they are chemical free.
  • Started recycling aluminum foil and plastic bags (and was able to get DH on board)
  • We have also been finding many ways to entertain ourselves at home instead of going out, perhaps because of the colder weather. We have been doing more reading and watching movies in front of a crackling fire. I think I also just appreciate being at home with my family since I spend so much time during the week at my job. It is nice to just enjoy our home and quiet surroundings.

What sorts of things have you been doing to save money recently? I love inspiration!
